GRIDSTART an interface between FP5 and 6 Dr Mark Parsons Commercial Director EPCC & NeSC
GRIDSTART • GRIDSTART • is an Accompanying Measure Cluster project • cluster projects are Commission tool designed to encourage cross-project dialogue, community-building and co-ordinated dissemination • Specific Support Actions are AMs in FP6 • started 1st April 2002 for 3 years • €1.5 million total funding • EPCC are coordinating partner
Goals • to encourage interaction between EU Grid projects • to identify synergies between different Grid application areas • to consolidate technical advances • to play a full role in setting Grid standards • to stimulate early takeup by industry and commerce • to be inclusive
Partners • formal • EPCC + CO partners of 10 EU Grid projects • DATAGRID, DATATAG, EUROGRID, GRIP, EGSO, CROSSGRID, AVO, DAMIEN, GRIA, GRIDLAB • informal • CO partners of all 9 FP5 Call 8 EU Grid projects • BIOGRID, COG, FLOWGRID, GEMSS, GRACE, MAMMOGRID, MOSES, OPENMOLGRID, SELENE • if your organisation is a partner of any of these projects – you’re a member of GRIDSTART
GRACE MOSES BIOGRID GEMSS MAMMOGRID OPENMOLGRID FLOWGRID Applications SELENE GRIA AVO EGSO EUROGRID CROSSGRID GRIP GRIDLAB DATAGRID DAMIEN DATATAG COG Middleware & Tools Industry/business Science The EU Grid Space GRIDSTART Transatlantic Grid networking testbed Testbed linking EU HPC centres and industry Tools and Grid services for interactive applications Testbed for industrial applications – focus on e-Business Application toolkit for Grid simulation codes Virtual observatory for astrophysics Distributed search and categorization engine for Grid Unified environment for molecular design/engineering Grid enabled EU database of mammograms Trial introduction of Grid approach in biotech industry Testbed for medical computing and Gird service providers Bridge between semantic web and P2P in e-Learning Grid ontologies of modelling of data in dispersed locations European solar observatory virtual archive Interoperability between Unicore and Globus CFD virtual organisation using Grid infrastructure Modular, scalable management tools for Knowledge Grid Middleware building blocks for simulation Middleware development, fabric & testbeds – PP, EO, Biomedics
Framework 6 • GRIDSTART bridges FP 5 and 6 • our technical and standards work is aimed at • bridging frameworks • identifying missing components • avoiding duplication in FP 6 (hopefully) • showing EU leadership in standards bodies • strong dissemination focus is also • designed to ensuring dissemination of FP 5 results beyond lifetime of projects • to ensure lessons of FP 5 are learnerd in FP 6
FP 6 (continued) • in FP 6 the Grid is developing out of research and into serious use • two clear directions • provision of production quality infrastructure for science and industry • enhanced industrial/commercial takeup through vendor quality middleware services solutions • Europe must understand what its strengths are and build on them • we’re already doing well!
GRIDSTART in FP 6 • clear need for a GRIDSTART type activity in FP 6 – but some differences • IPs and I3s are much larger and will have there own GRIDSTART-like activities • any activity must link these together across the Grid domain • avoids replication of development • ensures all large projects understand what is ongoing in European context – identification of synergies • planned proposal for GS2 after first call(s)
