  1. Interdependance Jeremy, Erik and Mackenzie

  2. Theme • When human beings are forced to change their lifestyles drastically due to isolation, then the individuals will tend to depend on each other, on a leader(s), and other familiar forms of civilized living, which can result in cooperation and order. However, it can also result in a struggle for power and disorder.

  3. “Wearily obedient, the choir huddled into line and stood there swaying in the sun.” (60) • The choir are loyal and dependant to Jack because they don’t know how to make their own decisions. • Jack’s authority over the choir dictates their actions, disabling the boys ability to act on their own accord.

  4. “The job was too much. We needed everyone.” (75) • They needed everyone to come together for the task of killing the pig, while neglecting their responsibility to keep the fire going. • Ralph was depending on them to keep the fire going, while Jack depended on his choir for the hunt. • The group was dependant on meat for survival, and also on keeping the fire going for rescue. Jack and Ralph’s dependence on the boys for support and/or help, causes conflict between the two because their priorities are different.

  5. “He’s not a hunter. He’d never get us meat. He isn’t perfect and we don’t know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey him for nothing. All this talk—” (139) • Jack and Ralph are in a power struggle, which affects the order of all the boys on the island and caused chaos to reign the island. • Jack is causing the boys to question Ralph’s authority over them. Jack believes that the dependence on a fire is unimportant and non progressive.

  6. “Do our dance! Come on! Dance!” (167) • This is peer pressure from Jack towards every other boy on the island. The tribal dance of a pig hunt is a sign of the savagery that the boys have taken to as a form of survival. • The peer pressure is bad because the boys became to lost in the intensity of the dance, which resulted in Simon’s death.

  7. “We’ve got to have special people for looking after the fire. Any day there may be a ship out there.” (42) • The choir is the group that ends up in charge of the signal fire. • The fire was important because it was a form of hope towards rescue. • The boys were dependant on Piggy’s glasses in order to start the fire, and so the glasses also became a point of conflict for the two tribes. • Ralph was dependant on the choir to honour their responsibility of maintaining the fire.

  8. “You got to go now Ralph” • Ralph was depending on Sam and Eric to keep a secret about where he would be the next day during the hunt for him. They let him down once again and told Jack where he was.

  9. Today’s Interdependence • When disaster struck Haiti, they had to depend on one another for support. Also they depended on other countries like Canada to help. • Without being able to depend on countries like Canada, Haiti would be left in chaos and ruins.
