My History in Observation • How did I get here? • Cloverbottom Dev. Center • PDP1140 • Apple II • IBMPC-DOS • Windows • Where am I now? • Wearing Many Hats: • IT Manager • Webmaster • Software Developer
Data Collection Methods • Timed Intervals • AKA Momentary Time Sampling • Real Time • Reflects Reality Better? • Reaction Time Issues • Observer Agreement Issues • Other?
Data Collection Options Overview • Mooses for Mobile • MOOSES for Windows PC/Laptop • INTMAN for Mobile • Procoder DV
Mooses Collection • Code when it happens • Mutually Exclusive and Exhaustive
INTMAN Collection • Observe/Record • Code during the record period • Mutually Exclusive and Exhaustive
ProcoderDV • Digital Video Issues • Capture • File Formats • Allows for coding of media files on a PC • Event Timed Sequence data • Transcriptions • Fixed Interval Coding • CSV Files (.pdv)
Analysis Options • Utilities • Recode • Data File Checker • File Merger • Output Options • To Screen/Notepad • To File (CSV) • To Spreadsheet via CSV
Analysis Options • Inter-observer agreement • Window Method • Second by Second Method • Comparing Outcomes Methods
Analysis Options • Sequential Overview • Event Based • Time Based • Yule’s Q as an Index • Permutation Testing
Definition of Sequential Analysis & Sequential Association (Yule’s Q index) • The analysis of sequences or co-occurrences of events or behaviors • Sequential association: The observed sequential occurrence NE chance level • Positive: observed frequency of sequence > chance • Negative: observed frequency of sequence < chance
Definition of terms • Given event: the “antecedent” behavior, “predictor” behavior, “proposed causal” behavior. • Target event: the “consequence”, the “proposed affected” behavior. • Base rate: the observed total frequency of a particular behavior in an observation session.
Analysis Options • Sequential Event Based
Analysis Options • Sequential Time Based
Analysis Options • Multi-Level Frequencies and Durations • Is there more aggression when the teacher is gone? • Is there more SIB when the sound level is high?
Other Software QAsker and AskerCE
Other Software Observer (Noldus) GSEQ (Bakeman) Transana SALT
