  2. Persuasive Essays • Purpose? - To convince the readers to agree with the writer on a specific issue. - How does that happen? - By writing a well planned essay . . .

  3. Persuasive Essays • Content? • A persuasive essay consists of 4main components. 1) Argument 2) Reasons/Evidence 3) Counter-Argument/Rebuttal 4) Call to Action

  4. Persuasive Essays • Wait! What was that?? - Person facing the TV, turn to the person across from you and tell them the FIRST 3 elements of a persuasive essay. - Person facing the word wall, tell the person across from you the SECOND 3 elements of a persuasive essay.

  5. Persuasive Essays In 1-2 sentences, answer this question: • What is one difference and what is one similarity you see in the elements of a persuasive essay compared to other essays you’ve written.

  6. Persuasive Essays • Argument/Introduction 1) Introducesthe issue 2) Gives background information on the issue. 3) States writer’s opinion of the issue.

  7. Persuasive Essays • Argument/Introduction • In your own words, describe the job of the argument in a persuasive essay.

  8. Persuasive Essays • Reasons 1) Well thought out ideas that support the writer’s opinion of the issue. 2) Writer will state why his/her opinion is correct (give a reason). 3) Writer will use this time to appeal to reader’s ethos, pathos, or logos.

  9. PersuasiveEssays • Evidence 1) Facts/statistics that give proof to the reasons the writer stated. 2) Evidenceis a MUST when persuading people.

  10. Persuasive Essays • Reasons/Evidence • What would your reaction be to someone who tried to persuade you WITHOUT reasons or evidence?

  11. Persuasive Essays • Counter Argument 1) Writer identifies the main argument of the opposite opinion. 2) Writer also discusses why the opposition might feel that way.

  12. Persuasive Essays • Rebuttal 1) Writer discusses why the rebuttal is incorrect (a comeback). 2) Writer provides evidence that the counter argument is incorrect.

  13. Persuasive Essays • Counter Argument/Rebuttal • In your own words, explain what the counter argument and rebuttal do in a persuasive essay.

  14. Persuasive Essays • Call to Action 1) Writer’s opinion on the issue is restated. 2) Writer tells readers what he/she wants them to do to help change the issue.

  15. Persuasive Essays • Call to Action • Explain what a call to action does that most essay conclusions do not.
