What is Readers Theater? • Used as an after reading activity, Readers Theater offers an engaging opportunity as a cooperative or shared reading of a piece of literature. • This literature can include a story, a poem, a script, or even a son • This is an activity designed to build fluency and motivation • This activity is designed for two or more readers. Even if the piece is scripted only for a few readers more may participate by making one of the characters a chorus.

  4. What is the process? • Script • Parts • Model reading • Guided reading • Independent practice • Perform • repeat

  5. Why use Readers Theatre? • Reader's theater is often defined by what it is not -- no memorizing, no props, no costumes, no sets; readers’ theatre is a performance script that the students will act out or read. • Readers’ theatre allows the student to interpret the text, put their own voices, expression and essentially become the character that they are portraying.

  6. Why use Readers Theatre? • Besides being a change of pace from the traditional way it also helps students to increase fluency and comprehension as well as offering a different context in which students are exposed to texts focusing on poetry, science, social studies, or other content-related topics
