  3. Origins of the Brief Guide • Since 1 April 1993 (corporate status) • More recently………… • Recognition by Learning and Skills Improvement Service re need to support • Student Governors (2 - 3) • Staff Governors (1 - 3)

  4. The process for the formation of the Brief Guide in 2009 included two sessions with Staff Governors And a session of trade union representatives, governors, clerks and a Staff Governor And the Brief Guide was tested by Staff Governors and Clerks to the Corporation

  5. The Brief Guide Good Governance : ALL members of the governing body WORKING TOGETHER for the BEST INTERESTS of the college Rich mix - ‘external’ and ‘internal’ governors

  6. Starting Point Instrument 12 [6] Every member (of the governing body) shall act in the best interests of the Corporation and shall not be bound to speak or vote by mandates given by any other body or person What are the best interests?
