  1. SELF MOTIVATION Presentation at NASAP Workshop 7th February, 2009 Theme: “Changed role and Profile of the 21st Century Secretary” By Grace N. Edube

  2. Motivation If you want to make things happen the ability to motivate yourself and others is a crucial skill. At work, home, and everywhere in between, people use motivation to get results. Motivation requires a delicate balance of communication, structure, and incentives. And yet you cant motivate others when you are not motivated yourself. 3/12/2014 2

  3. Reasons We Lose Motivation There are 3 primary reasons we lose motivation. Lack of confidence - If you don’t believe you can succeed, what’s the point in trying? Lack of focus - If you don’t know what you want, do you really want anything? Lack of direction - If you don’t know what to do, how can you be motivated to do it? 3/12/2014 3

  4. Motivation • Staying motivated is a struggle — our drive is constantly assaulted by negative thoughts and anxiety about the future. Everyone faces doubt and depression. What separates the highly successful is the ability to keep moving forward. • There is no simple solution for a lack of motivation. Even after beating it, the problem reappears at the first sign of failure. The key is understanding your thoughts and how they drive your emotions. • By learning how to nurture motivating thoughts, neutralize negative ones, and focus on the task at hand, you can pull yourself out of a slump before it gains momentum.

  5. TODAY’S REALITIES • Careers are changing and it is more likely that an individual will progress in a variety of organizations rather than remaining in one all their working lives. • One will end up changing to a different career area, either within the same or to a different organization. • Opportunities for upward promotions are decreasing as organizations are delayering and activities contracted out. • Organisations see career development through job expansion as a more realistic and better alternative. • Constant organizational charge causing uncertainty and hope for life time careers. • Organisations increasingly expect individuals to take charge of their careers.

  6. Embrace Change: Expect It and Accept It • Change is constant- don’t let it surprise you. • Competition in every field makes companies constantly look for ways to do things better, more efficiently. • To stand still is to fall behind. 12 March 2014
