What are Student Growth Percentiles? • Student Growth Percentiles measure how much a student has learned from one year to the next compared to other students with similar test scores. • Student growth is expressed as a percentile from 1 to 99. • Let’s look at a few examples that show how Student Growth Percentiles (SGP) work.

Key concepts about Measuring Growth Growth is distinct from achievement A student can achieve at a low level but grow significantly, and vice versa (Jimmy, Rosa, Elijah) Each student is compared only to theiracademic peers (students with similar achievement levels) The comparison base for TCRP is all 2nd to 11th grade students in TCRP & LAUSD Demographic variables, socio-economic status and initial achievement have virtually no impact on student growth results.

How do you increase your SGP score? • Simple Answer • Accelerate your students’ mastery of the standards and minimize skill declines • What indicators do we currently have of the degree to which students are accelerating their mastery of the standards and minimizing declines? • Student on-track to move up proficiency levels (particularly if the student didn’t start just below a CST scale score proficiency level cut point) • Student not on-track to drop proficiency levels (particularly more than one level in grades where the CST is particularly hard e.g. 3rd ELA) • Teachers with above average proficiency level gains and the lowest proficiency level declines at their grade are most likely to have high SGP scores • Not all teachers with above average proficiency level accelerations and low drops will necessarily have high SGPs (particularly if the average proficiency level increases at their grade are relatively low) • Teachers with high proportions of kids at the P/A levels can have a high SGP without having to be above the average proficiency level increase for their grade if their students are growing within their proficiency bands

SGP and API/AYP • What implications does SGP have for API? • SGP and API are aligned in that both provide big incentives for you to accelerate your students’ learning (i.e. high SGP score and high API score). API however only gives you credit when kids move up a proficiency level while SGP counts all student growth (i.e. both within and across prof levels). Practically you want to continue to focus on accelerating your students up proficiency levels to get them to grade level or higher and to have clear evidence of growth. You particularly want to focus on your lowest performing students (with extra literacy support if necessary and emphasis on standards they can master). • What implications does SGP have for AYP? • To make AYP you will most likely have to accelerate students up to the Proficient level. This is good both for students (i.e. to be at grade level) and for your SGP (i.e. accelerating students). You want to provide great differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all of your students. During certain times of the year you may want to particularly focus on ensuring specific students or student groups are mastering the standards covered. At a school level, it may make sense to provide Prof Cusp students with additional academic supports.

  21. SGP Recap • SGP is a statistically valid student growth model. • Student’s increase in proficiency levels still matter because they are a key measure of mastery and the source of API changes, but they are broad measures. SGP is a more precise measurement of student growth because it takes into account a students growth “within” proficiency levels. (For example, growth from a “low” basic score one year to a “high” basic score the next year). • SGP is more precise in that your students are being compared with other students with the same starting skill (i.e. scale score) levelin LAUSD and TCRP. • Generally teachers with high accelerations and low proficiency level drops are going to have high SGP scores. In other words, your SGP should correlate with other Aspire measures of growth most of the time.
