Characteristics • Encompasses ones entire being • Undercuts individuality • Disregards personal dignity • Subjects person to regimented pattern of life • Little connection with ones own desires or inclination • Is inescapable
The Participant World • Individual comes into the total institution with established routines, rhythms, and expectations that no longer will work • Great unease, discomfort, mis-trust, etc. may often be present • A real loss of the sense of self may be very present • Forced enculturation to the demands and expectations of the institution may be very punishing • Loss of personal identity, possessions of importance, etc. • Institutional symbols may replace personal possessions • “Escape” from the institution may be correlated with a sense that routines and rhythms may be restored
Participant World, Con’t • Institutional Authority • First • Any staff member has the authority to direct, discipline, any participant • Second • Authority or correction is directed towards a great number of items, and judgments not consistent with rules • Third • Misbehaviors in one sphere of life are held against a person in another sphere
Characteristically a Privilege System • “House Rules” are common • Small number of defined rewards are held out in exchange for obedience • May result in obsessive behavior to get the reward • E.g. – cigarettes, internet time, food etc. • System may include punishment/consequences • E.g. for breaking the rules: withdrawal of some privilege
Privilege System con’t • Privileges and punishment may be an organizing principal of the institution • Moving to more independence may be directly related to compliance with the privilege system • Compliance with the privilege system often will cross over between spheres of life which in the real world are separated
