THE VILLAGES OF ENGLAND LOOSE – NEAR MAIDSTONE, KENT
HISTORY Pronounced Looz” meaning Pig Sty, the village dates from Saxon times. A number of buildings date from the mid-15th Century and are still in everyday use. It’s location on the river Loose was ideal for providing water power for a mill which led to it’s growth.

IN THE CHURCHYARD Many older English churchyards contain one or more Yew trees. There are several theories as to the reason for this – Druids, Archery or, due to its poisonous leaves, a symbol of death. This specimen in Loose churchyard is over 1500 years old and measures over 33 feet in circumference
