Tuesday Openings • Active and Passive Voice – • Active Voice occurs when the subject performs the action. In Passive Voice, the subject of the sentence is acted on by another agent. • Example • Passive: Snuffles was taken to the vet by my mom. • Active: My mom took Snuffles to the vet. • Rewrite in Active Voice • Chrissy’s dress for the dance was chosen by her mom.
Grammar • Correct Improving Sentences • Colons and Semi-colons • Semi-colon rules – these are rarely used ones. • Colons – a couple very common ones – the list, business letter, intro quotation. • Complete Lesson 2. • Learning Target: • I can edit for colons and semi-colons and commas. • I can combine sentences for variety and emphasis.
Semi-Colons • Special uses – both due to many commas already in the word item. • Christina had the opportunity to tour several places in Europe as part of her internship this summer, including Prague, Czeckalovokia, Yakutsk, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Irkutsk, Siberia. • How many places did Christina visit?

Journal • Opening – do Journal 2 – Word Choice • Review the Top Ten Word Choice Mistakes list. • Write a paragraph about a friend, a class, or your job. Use a word from each of the 1-10 word choice items. Thesis • Thesis will be centered around a specific career, internship, apprenticeship, military program, or college goal. • Part of the thesis needs to identify why this is a viable option for you – • Why you think you would be good at this • What experiences you have had that make you settle on this particular choice.
Thesis • Not a thesis • Sam, Steve, and my mom. • Everything influenced my choice of career • I plan to go to college at MCC; then I will transfer to GVSU. • Will work as a thesis • My love of the outdoors and my family have influenced me to pursue a career as a conversation officer. • From my experiences in CTC and my family members who already work in construction, I have decided I want to study to be an engineer.
Compose your thesis • Once approved, begin outlining your body paragraphs. • What can you use as examples? • What story can you tell to illustrate this about you? • What specifics are in your background that you can talk about? • Learning Target: I can write a clear precise thesis that incorporates two key points.
Wednesday • No Opening • Please get out Lesson 2 – • Have me stamp it if I did not yesterday. • Correct it. • We will start by making our thesis statements I talked about yesterday. • Make notes for body paragraph • After approved, may work on computer
Wednesday • Correct Lesson 2 • Review Body paragraphs • Type up body paragraphs • Print off for work tomorrow. • Learning Targets • I can edit for errors in commas, semi-colons, and colons. • I can explain my career goal and support it with specific relevant details.
Thursday OPENING – Please take out Lesson 2 – I should have already stamped it – I will put answers up as soon as the bell rings. Wait to get computer until directed – you will use same number as when we have COWS.

Apostrophes – mean possession • Max’s car • The tourist’s wallet • The girls’ dressing room • The employees’ bonuses. • Add ‘s – car of Max • Add ‘s – wallet of the tourist • Add ‘ after the s – dressing room of the girls (dressing room of more than one girl) • Add ‘ after the s – bonuses are for all the employees. • Do Lesson 3. When finished, get your computer – and turn in the Improving Sentences assignment.
Body Paragraphs • State with a statement of focus – • Develop • Tell stories • Explain past experience that is related • Use specific people, places, events. • Final Sentence • Tie back to thesis.
Conclusion • Bring reader/listener up to your present • What have you done in taking steps toward your career/college goal? • What do you have left to do? • These will typically be very short – 3-4 sentences. (the reverse of your intro) • Learning Target: I can wrap up my career narrative and keep it focused on the topic.
Friday • Opening – Write the corrected version of the sentence below. • Its to bad when it’s the weekend and their are so many things I want to do and only 48 hours too do them, so my dog did not get its bath unless you count walking in the rain. • (This is all one sentence – but there are punctuation and word choice issues)
Journal 3 • You have received a list of vocabulary words. These are words that are 12th grade vocabulary. Many you know but may not use regularly. • You will be required to use some in your final personal narrative. • For now, select at least 5 of the words and use them correctly in sentences talking about yourself, your interests, and/or your skills. You are to write 3-5 sentneces. • When finished, please grab your COW.
Friday • Correct Lesson 3 • Journal 3 • Review Introduction – look at my comments • Revise your introduction and tie in thesis to it. • Assemble and submit essay to Turnitin.com • Peer Revision on Monday – if you are absent, know that you will need to do this on your own during the day on Monday.
