  2. Population Size and Composition: 2003 Approximately 33.5 million foreign-born people live in the United States. The foreign born represent 11.7 percent of the U.S. population.   6. Age: 2003 Relatively few foreign-born people are under age 18 (8.9 percent) compared with 27.9 percent of the native population. The foreign born are more likely than natives to be 18 to 64 years of age (80.1 percent and 60.0 percent, respectively). The proportion of the foreign born aged 65 years and over (11.1 percent) differed slightly from that of natives of the same age group (12.1 percent).   18. Residence: 2003 Among the foreign born, 37.3 percent live in the West and only 11.3 percent live in the Midwest. Among the native population, 36.5 percent live in the South and only 18.5 percent live in the Northeast. The foreign born are more likely than natives to live inside central cities of metropolitan areas (44.4 percent and 26.9 percent, respectively).
