Timeline of Teesside • 1945 – demand for iron and steel gradually increased, needed in construction and replenishment of the armed forces. • 1950 – Teesside produced 30% of the UKs iron • 1960s – demand for steel was high, Teesside was the ‘industrial centre for the future’. A large integrated steel works was opened at Redcar. Shell oil refinery opened, ICI expanded.

  3. The tide turned • By 1970 – world oil price soared. The chemical industries began to close and move abroad • Global demand for steel fell so the workforce fell from 30,000 in 1975 to under 5,000 in 1990. • By 1987 25% of people on Teesside were unemployed. TASK: explain what the effects of 25% unemployment were on the people of Teesside.

  4. The Recovery • In 1987 the Teesside Development Corporation (TDC) was set up to improve Teesside and bring new jobs. They did the following: • £500 million pounds of offices, houses, shops and leisure including Teesside Park, MFC and the Barrage • Cleaned up pollution on the river Tees, salmon and seals are now common New jobs created now means unemployment is at 12%. How has this made things better for the people of Teesside?
