Galatians 1:6-10. Scripture says people would fall away.
E N D
Scripture says people would fall away. • “The time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (2 Tim 4:3-4). • “There were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you” (2 Pet 2:1).
The Galatians were turning to a different gospel, which is not another gospel. • Paul uses two different Greek words—“different”/ “another.” • NIV: You “are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all.”
If anyone preaches a different gospel, let him be eternally condemned. • This says preaching is nothing to play around with. • “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment” (Js 3:1).
God has given a message to be proclaimed. • “As the Lordlives, whatever the Lordsays to me, that I will speak” (1 Ki 22:14). • “Preach the word!” (2 Tim 4:2).
Believing anything but that one gospel can cost you your soul. • “Hymenaeusand Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some” (2 Tim 2:17-18). • “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God” (2 Jn 1:9).
One: You need to check behind the preacher. • The Bereans “were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11). • If you’re going to check behind the preacher: • You need to bring your Bible. • You need to pay attention.
Two: You need to check yourself. • You need to check your Bible to make sure you believe what is right. • 2 Tim 3:16-17. • “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Pet 1:3). • We need to study the Bible!
Three: You must teach your children. • God wants parents to teach their children His truths. • Deut 6:6-7. • “Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord” (Eph 6:4). • The world will not teach our children in the way they should go!
Four: You must teach the truth to others. • So many want to do God’s will, but they are caught up in error. • We have a responsibility to teach. • “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mk 16:15). • We’re to teach the one gospel to everyone. • Do you know the gospel well enough to teach someone? • Do you need to obey the one gospelthis morning?
