Fruit of the Spirit • Goodness • Faithfulness • Gentleness • Self-Control • Love • Joy • Peace • Patience • Kindness
Work of the Holy Spirit • The fruit of the Spirit is not produced by the flesh; rather by the very Holy Spirit Himself. (John 15:1-8) • Also, the fruit here is in the singular, meaning that the fruit constitutes a unity that is found in the person who is controlled by the Holy Spirit.
Love • The form of this word is Agapen with the root being Agape. • This love is selfless and sacrificial; a love of the mind, of reason, and of the will. • One who doesn’t deserve it, love for one who is utterly unworthy of being loved, love that is compelled to sacrifice itself for its enemies (ROM 5:8)
Joy • The Greek word Charas closely related to Charis which means grace. • This is an inner gladness a deep seated pleasure; it comes out of depth of assurance and confidence in God. • This joy does not rely on circumstances or happiness; it is the very joy of the Lord, it is divine. • Joy springs from faith (Mat 2:10, Rom 15:13, Phil 1:25.)
Sources of Joy • Fellowship with God. (1JOHN 1:3-4) • Victory over sin, death, hell. (John 16:20-22) • Repentance (Luke 15:7) • The hope of glory (Rom 14:17, Heb 12:2) • The Lord’s Word (John 15:11) • Obedience and the Commandments (John 15:11; 17:13) • Prayer (John 16:24) • Presence of other believers (1 John 1:3-4) • Converts (1 Thess 2:19-20) • Hearing that others walk in the truth (3 John 1:4) • Giving (2 Cor 8:2)
Discuss • Describe how this kind of love is manifest in the life of a believer. • How is God’s love different than man’s love? • What is the difference between the joy of the world and the joy of the Lord? • What is the difference between pleasure and joy?
