ENERGY RESOURCES By: Nasiyah Smith
Natural Gas • Natural gas is widely available (advantage) • Natural gas is used in the production of ammonia (advantage) • Natural gas harms the ozone because it is a fossil fuel (disadvantage) • Natural gas is a nonrenewable resource (disadvantage) • Natural gas is a clean form of energy • Natural gas is an alternative form of energy that can be used for powering vehicles
Solar Energy • Solar energy is unlimited (advantage) • Solar energy does not cause air pollution (advantage) • Solar energy can harm the ecosystem if not managed (disadvantage) • Solar power can not be used in all areas because of the amount of sunlight (disadvantage) • Solar energy is an effective alternative power source
Coal • Once the mining is finished we can use the land for croplands, wildlife habitats, recreation offices and stores (advantage) • Coal generates electricity and produces steel, cement and paper (advantage) • If we don't mine carefully we can destroy land and polluted water (disadvantage) • Coal is nonrenewable (disadvantage) • Over 100,000 men die from mining coal (disadvantage) • Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel mined in the U.S. • 92 percent of coal is used in the U.S. to generate electricity and produce the basic sources (steel, cement and paper)
Wind • Wind turns the turbines to produce electric energy (advantage) also renewable • Wind is clean fuel that has no pollutants (advantage) • Wind can disfigure the landscape (disadvantage) • Wind can cause harm to the bird population (disadvantage) • Wind is a cost efficient alternative to fossil fuels • We can sell off the excess electricity to power companies
Hydropower • Hydropower is simpler and cheaper to maintain (advantage) • Hydropower does not produce pollution or harmful environmental effects (advantage) • Hydropower can cause neighboring floods (disadvantage) • Hydropower can change the environment (disadvantage) • Hydropower produces a quarter of the electrical needs across the world • Hydropower is efficient
Biomass • Biomass can pollute the air when burned (disadvantage) • Biomass produces methane gas (disadvantage) • Biomass is renewable ( advantage) • Biomass is used for transportation fuel (advantage) • Biomass provides 3 percent of the fuel that is used in the U.S. • Plants get energy from the sun, then animals get energy from the plants and we (people) get energy from the animals
Oil • Carbon Dioxide can be used as a alternative fuel source (advantage) • Oil can be used to heat homes when refined oil can be turned into gasoline for vehicles (advantage) • Oil is a nonrenewable resource (disadvantage) • If oil is misused it can cause pollution to the water system (disadvantage) • Oil is what we use for synthetics • Oil is also what we use for plastic and medication
Geothermal • Geothermals power plants are entirely safe (advantage) • Geothermal energy is renewable (advantage) • Geothermals power plants are expensive to build (disadvantage) • Geothermals power source can be very hard to manage (disadvantage) • Geothermal is used in building roads • Utility companies use geothermal energy to produce electricity
Nuclear Power • Nuclear power does not depend on fossil fuels (advantage) • Natural gasses fuel is found in abundance (advantage) • Natural gas is fueled by something deadly or harmful (disadvantage) • When natural gas is not closely monitored it will cause radioactive that will last thousands of years and its nonrenewable (disadvantage) • Natural gas is used for radioactive • Natural gas can produce light and heat and is a good alternative for fossil fuels
