Influences Of fashion • Their fashion was dictated by the Feudal system, also called the Pyramid of power. There were restrictions regarding what people wore. There was a law against the poor wearing clothes that only the rich would wear. Therefore, you would be able to know the status of someone by the clothing they wore.
Prominent Silhouette • Small and shapelier waistline for women. • High neckline in the early middle ages. • Lower neckline in the later middle ages.
Popular Designers and/or Labels • There wasn’t any access to public design because everyone made there own clothing.
Fashion Trends • Scholars would wear Read cloaks. • The poor would wear dull colours, like brown and gray, and clothing made out of shapeless wool for clothing. • Short dresses that showed men’s bums where restricted only to the wealthy. • Women wore Fancy hats to make a statement. • Leggings and/ or hose.
Popular Colours • Wearing red in the middle ages symbolized a scholar • Gold cloth was a sign of extreme wealth, and was the ultimate status symbol. • Bright colours were only worn by the rich. • Purple was worn to look more rich and important.
Textiles • Wool was the most common and important material used in the middle ages. • Linen was used for clothing that had direct contact with skin, because isn’t as coarse and ruff as wool. • Silk cloth and gold thread for the rich was used for decoration. • Cotton was also imported from Egypt was used for padding and quilting. • Leather was used as shoes.
Fashion Parallels to Other Time Periods • Some fashion designers are bringing it back. • Flower wreaths are becoming popular. This style is very middle age. • Leggings were worn by everyone in the middle age. It is now popular now in our age.
Historical Moments • The Black Death (1348-1350 AD) The plague that many people died from. This plague reduced government influence, due to the fact that the peasants were angry that they couldn’t help them. • The Great Famine (1315-1317 AD) A big portion of the population died, because of the 2-year famine. The crime rates increased and there were many cases of cannibalism. • The Hundred Years’ War (1337 AD) A war between the Kingdom of France, and the Kingdom of England. The war lasted a year.
