Background • Apartheid Legislation in South Africa • Starting in 1948, the Nationalist Government in South Africa enacted laws to define and enforce segregation. • What makes South Africa's apartheid era different to segregation and racial hatred that have occurred in other countries is the systematic way in which the National Party, which came into power in 1948, formalized it through the law.

Main Laws • The Population Registration Act of 1950 formalized racial classification and introduced an identity card for all persons over the age of eighteen, specifying their racial group. • Mixed Marriages Act of 1949 prohibited marriage between persons of different races. • Immorality Act of 1950 made sexual relations with a person of a different race a criminal offence. • The Riotous Assemblies Act of 1956 prohibited disorderly gatherings. • The Unlawful Organizations Act of 1960 outlawed certain organizations that were deemed threatening to the government. • The Bantu Authorities Act of 1951 created separate government structures for blacks. • The Extension of University Education Act of 1959 created separate universities for blacks, coloureds and Indians.
