What are Glaciers? • Large body of ice and snow that has been built up over centuries. • Glaciers can move at a rate of 2 cm/yr under their own weight and gravity • They move and destroy everything in their path, bulldozing trees, rock, etc… • They can wear down Mountains, turning them into hills, and flat land. • They can carve valleys out of rock

  5. Water Erosion • Wears away the surface of earth using rivers and other sources of surface water. • Destroys landscapes and houses due to massive rainfall. • Water can pick up minerals and drop them off at another location. • Water can dissolve minerals

  8. Glacial versus Water Erosion Glaciers Water Water falls to earth during rain. Fast moving water moves down slope, carries away sediments Carves out the land Major force of erosion Water dissolves particles and deposits them elsewhere • Large Mountains of snow and ice that build up over time. • Slow moving under its own weight • Acts as a bulldozer, moving down rocks, trees, picking up sediment and scraping and polishing land as it moves

Valley V-shaped U-shaped Results when a river valley has been further eroded by a glacier The glacier over deepens a v shaped valley, polishing and reshaping the contour of the walls • Found near the source of rivers • Formed from fast moving water dissolving and breaking down rock and minerals along its path.
