Honors ChemistryUnit 12 - Gases Lesson 1 – Manometers Book Section: 11-1 Do Now: Prepare for Quiz 12-1
Barometers • A barometer is a device that can measure atmospheric pressure. • The atmospheric pressure pushes the mercury up the tube. • The height difference represents the pressure in mm Hg, or millimeters of mercury.
Manometers • A manometer works in a similar fashion – but measures the pressure of a container of gas instead of the atmosphere. • There are two types: closed-end and open-end manometers.
Manometers • An open-end manometer is used to measure the difference between atmospheric pressure and that of a gas in a vessel. • The atmosphere pushes down on the open end. • Pgas = Patm + h • (in mm Hg)
Manometers • A closed-end manometer will only measure the pressure of the gas inside the vessel. • The atmosphere can not affect the manometer. • Pgas = h
3 Manometers… analyze each • If h1, h2, and h3 are equal to 50 mm Hg, what is Pgas? • Assume that Patm = 760 mm Hg (standard pressure)
