What is the disease • This is an upper respiratory infection. • Pharyngitis is gram positive • The pharyngitis is caused by swelling in the back throat (pharynx) between the tonsils and the (larynx)
Description • Pharyngitis is inflammation, discomfort, or pain in the throat most commonly caused by an infectious etiology, including viruses and typical and atypical bacteria • features may be suggestive for viral etiology or group A B-hemolytic streptococcal infection • Group A B-hemolyticStreptococcusorganisms are the most common cause of bacterial pharyngitis. This is the most serious treatable type of pharyngitis, as it can complicate with rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis
Statistics • Approximately 30 million cases of pharyngitis are diagnosed annually in the U.S., • Sore throat accounts for 1% to 2% of outpatient visits • Over 50% of cases of pharyngitis are diagnosed in patients between 5 and 24 years of age • It is diagnosed in up to 37% of all children presenting with sore throat to outpatient settings
Symptoms • Some of the symptoms is sore throat. • Some other symptoms is fever, headache, joint pain and muscle aches, skin rashes, swallow lymph nodes in the neck.
Transmission • You can get strep throat ( Pharyngitis) by direct contact with saliva or fluids from the nose an infected person. • A crowded environment like a dormitory, school, or nursing home, can make it easier for the bacteria to spread.
Prevention Care • Avoid kissing , sharing cups, and eating utensils with anyone who has a sore throat , a cold flu, mononucleosis, or bacteria infection. • Wash your hands • Don’t smoke and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke. • Use a humidifier if the air in your home is dry. • If fail to do this you will have a higher risk of getting Pharyngitis
Treatment • If your doctor suspects that you have a sore throat caused by bacteria , such as strep throat, he/she will prescribe you antibiotics. • But if your sore throat is caused by a virus antibiotics won’t help. It will eventually go away.
Home Treatment • Rest • Drink lots of fluids. Water and warms broths are better than soft drinks. • Avoid drinking alcohol • Gargle several time per day with ½ tsp. of salt in a glass of warm water. • Try throat lozenges but not give them to a child under 3 years old due to choking hazard.
