The length of time that a particular disease can be spread from person to person • contagiousperiod A viral disease characterized by a severe sore throat and swelling of the lymph glands in the neck and around the throat area • mononucleosis A viral disease of the liver characterized by yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes • hepatitis

  3. A bacterial disease that usually affects the lungs • tuberculosis A serious inflammation of the lungs • pneumonia A sore throat caused by streptococcal bacteria • strep throat

  6. Colds When You Have A Cold Get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids. Some over-the-counter (OTC) medicines can help relieve cold symptoms. Stay home for at least 24 hours after cold symptoms first appear.

  11. Hepatitis There are three types of hepatitis. hepatitis A viral disease of the liver characterized by yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes

  12. Hepatitis HepatitisA • Most commonly spread through food or water that has been contaminated with human waste. • Vaccines can protect people from this type. HepatitisB • Most commonly spread through contact with contaminated blood or other body fluids. • Vaccines can protect people from this type. HepatitisC • Most commonly spread through contact with contaminated blood or other body fluids. • Medications can help treat people with this type.

  13. Tuberculosis Because tuberculosis spreads easily through the air, people are regularly tested for the disease. tuberculosis A bacterial disease that usually affects the lungs Sometimes people who test positive for TB show no symptoms.

  14. Pneumonia Pneumonia can be caused by a virus or bacteria. pneumonia A serious inflammation of the lungs Pneumonia can be spread through direct or indirect contact.

  15. Strep Throat Left untreated, strep throat can lead to serious complications, such as heart or kidney damage. strep throat A sore throat caused by streptococcal bacteria Strep throat is spread through direct or indirect contact and can be easily treated with antibiotics.

  16. Strep Throat Symptoms of strep throat include a red and painful throat, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
