  1. Finding distances M8G2. Students will understand and use the Pythagorean Theorem. Lesson 3.3

  2. How can you find the distance between these two points? L K Lesson 3.3

  3. How can we use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of this oblique line segment? What right triangle has this hypotenuse? Since they are vertical and horizontal can we count to find the lengths? L Can we sketch the legs? K Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of segment KL. Lesson 3.3

  4. A = 4 + 25 = 29 A = 4 A =25 Lesson 3.3

  5. So, what is the distance between points K and L? 52 + 22 = 29 L Since the area of the square on the hypotenuse is 29, what is the length of the hypotenuse? K Yes! The length of the hypotenuse is… Lesson 3.3

  6. B. Find the distance between points M and N by connecting them with a segment and using the Pythagorean Theorem. What do you do first? Draw the other 2 legs …remember they should be vertical and horizontal so we can count to determine the lengths. Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of segment MN. Lesson 3.3

  7. C. Find the distance between points P and Q by connecting them with a segment and using the Pythagorean Theorem. What do you do first? Draw the other 2 legs …remember they should be vertical and horizontal so we can count to determine the lengths. Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of segment MN. Lesson 3.3

  8. C. On the back of your handout Find two points that are units apart. Can the -unit line segment be vertical or horizontal? No! Assume this segment is the hypotenuse of a right triangle. What will the area of the square of the hypotenuse be? It will have to be 13 units. What are the lengths of the legs of the two squares? Can you think of 2 squares whose sum is 13 units? Lesson 3.3

  9. What are the lengths of the two legs you must draw? Let’s test that! Lesson 3.3

  10. How can you find a line segment with a length of ? Lesson 3.3
