Our Solar System and Beyond Great Distances
How many of you have travelled to other countries? Some distances from Montreal: New York 534.4 km Los Angeles 3962.2 km Kingston, Jamaica 3075.5km London, England 5227.2 km Tel Aviv, Israel 8783.8 km Cape Town, South Africa 12766.9 km Beijing, China 10467.2 km Sydney, Austrailia16027.5 km Circumference of the equator : 40 0755 km
We will be dealing with distances MUCH greater than that! To get an idea of the scale, here is a video: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/cosmology-and-astronomy/universe-scale-topic/scale-small-large-tutorial/v/scale-of-the-large
Turn to page 281 in your textbook. To measure the distance between objects within our solar system, we use astronomical units (AU). The AU is calculated as the mean distance between the Earth and the sun. 1 AU = 149 597 870.691 km (or approximately 150 million km) Interplanetary distances
Drawing to Scale Why is drawing our solar system to the proper scale difficult? Bill Nye knows the answer! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97Ob0xR0Ut8
For even greater distances, we use light years (ly) In space, light travels at 299 792 km per second. In a year, light travels 9 460 530 000 000 km or approximately 9 500 billion km. (the calculation is on p 282 in your textbook.) Distances outside of our solar system
Read pages 281 – 287 in your textbook, as well as section 2.3 on p289-290. Once complete, do questions 5 to 10 on pages 293 – 294. Hint: use scientific notation for the number calculations. See page 281 for help. Exercises
