Stigma and the Media - Myths Myth 1: Schizophrenics display Jekyll-and Hyde-like split personalities. Myth 2: Schizophrenics are violent, often criminally so.Myth 3: Schizophrenia is permanent and untreatable.
Myth Perpetuation in Media -One of the most vivid examples of myth perpetuation was Jim Carey's role in "Me, Myself, and Irene."- Two split personalities, Charlie and Hank. - MANY violent tantrums and offensive behavior -- defecating on a neighbor's lawn, etc. -Seen as a "character flaw" rather than a disorder and accepted as permanent.
Diagnosis -Schizophrenia occurs in .33 to .72 percent of the United States population. -Two main groups of symptoms -Positive: overt symptoms (hallucinations, and delusions etc.) -Negative: covert symptoms (lack of emotion/speech and inability to perform self-care) **Two or more of these symptoms must be present for ONE month**
Diagnosis -Five subtypes that characterize symptoms -Paranoid, Catatonic, Disorganized, Undifferentiated, and Residual -Median age for onset: 22 years -Prevalence rate higher in males than females -Schizophrenia is often times comorbid with other mental disorders (mood disorders and substance-related disorders)
Diagnosis -Risk factors include; -Living in an urban area, immigration, obstetrical complications, advanced paternal age at time of contraception, low socioeconomic status and late winter-early spring time of birth.
Schizophrenia and Class -"The risk of becoming homeless for persons with schizophrenia and related disorders is more than ten times greater than the risk for the general population" (Olfson). - One third of the homeless population is comprised of homeless people (mentalillnesspolicy.org). -Six percent of people with schizophrenia become homeless (mentalillnesspolicy.org).
Schizophrenia and Prison -Around 20% of those in prison suffer from a mental illness (Human Rights Watch) -Between 4-6% of prisoners are suffering from a Psychotic disorder such as Schizophrenia -Around 10% of people suffering from Schizophrenia are convicted of a crime and most of those crimes are non violent (Mullen)
Schizophrenia and Prison - Often times, misdiagnosis of drug induced psychosis occurs when Schizophrenia is present. - " It is the duty of mental health services both to manage the violence that can emerge from Schizophrenia and to work with individuals who are misusing substances" (Mullen)
