  1. TARGET: Israeli & Palestinian Conflict • Make a list of facts would you want to know to solve this situation: • John and Susie are both arguing that a ball field is theirs for practice. • They both claimed to have reserved the field for that time, but the sign-up sheets have been locked up. • They have both used that field for years. • Your reputation as someone who’s fair and level-headed got you the job of arbitrating their argument.

  2. Key Terms and PlacesIsrael • Jerusalem – the capital of Israel; it contains the holy sites of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. • kosher – a term used to refer to Jewish dietary laws; it means “acceptable” in Hebrew. • kibbutz – in Israel, a large farm where people share everything in common. • Gaza – a city in southwestern Israel on the Mediterranean Sea. • West Bank – a disputed territory in eastern Israel.

  3. Israel and Palestine: The Roots of Conflict Pre-Video Discussion • Before Israel was established as a Jewish state in 1948, the region was known as Palestine and was home to many Arabs. Today, the Jews and Arabs who live there regard the country as sacred land. • Arab nations in the Middle East have been involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

  4. As you watch the video, take notes on the following: • Why do both the Jews and the Arabs feel entitled to the disputed land? • Who’s right? • Make note of the key Arab groups in the struggle for peace and land • Make note of the extremist groups which make the process more difficult.
