1. Welcome to Starfish class! Helping your child to read.

2. Jolly Phonics • Jolly Phonics is a fun way of learning sounds. • Each letter sound has an action. • So far we have learnt, s a t p i n c / k e h r m d. • We practise them every day!

3. Digraphs and trigraphs • Later we will be learning (as Year 1 are), 2 letter and 3 letter sounds. • Digraphs are aiaree or eriengnketc • A trigraph is as in igh in high or ear in tear.

7. Segmenting and Blending • We have already started to segment and blend with the sounds we have learnt so far. • We use our fingers to segment. • We use a swish to help us blend! • Children sometimes find it hard to blend the last sound. e.g pin becomes pit / pid /pig

8. Segmenting and Blending to Read • Strategies we use: • Tracky finger • Our phonics • Split a word • Trapping • Picture clues • If it didn’t make sense read it again.

9. Tricky words • Tricky words are words that can not be segmented or blending. • They just have to learn them by sight. • So far we have learnt, I ,a, to, no, into and the. • Later we will add words like, love, be, we, me etc.
