  3. Key Term • Humanism: the belief that humans should make the most of their lives on Earth and use logic to understand their world

  4. Humanism • In the 1300s and 1400s, Europeans created a new way of understanding the world called humanism. • Humanists believed people should be involved in their cities, develop their talents, and use knowledge (instead of religious faith) to understand the world.

  7. Language and Literature • Humanists wrote many books in Latin, which was a well-known language to many Europeans. • Humanists spread their ideas through writing, and eventually started writing in modern languages such as Italian, French, and German.

  12. Famous Renaissance Artists • Leonardo da Vinci was a famous Renaissance artist, scientist, inventor, and engineer. Da Vinci cut open dead bodies to learn about the human body. He also painted the Mona Lisa, one of the world's most famous paintings.

  13. Famous Renaissance Artists • Michelangelo was an artist in Florence, Italy. His most famous work is his painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel & the statue David.

  14. Famous Renaissance Artists • William Shakespeare is the greatest English playwright (writer of plays) from the Renaissance. His famous works, such as Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, are still studied today.
