Introduction to ArcGIS 12/12/2012
Class Topics • Welcome and Introductions • Lesson 1: Overview • Lesson 2: Data Frames and Layers • Lesson 3: Accessing DNR Data • Lesson 4: Exploring Data • Lesson 5: Working with Tables • Lesson 6: Labels, Annotation, and Graphics • Lesson 7: Building Layouts
Lesson 1: Overview • ArcMap license • ArcMap User Interface components • Toolbars and Context Menus • Extra: ArcMap Where Window
ArcMap Program Modules for desktop ArcGIS : • ArcMap – for interactive data editing, making maps and analysis • ArcCatalog – for browsing, accessing, and managing (creating and organizing) data
ArcMap Interactive Map-Based Tasks • Mapping • Editing • Queries • Analysis • Printing
ArcCatalog • Browse and preview data • Create, define and manage data and projects • Create and view metadata • Create a new shapefile or geodatabase
Enterprise License • Enterprise License Agreement between ESRI and Minnesota state agencies includes: • ArcMap Desktop software • Stand alone Desktop Advanced licensing • Unlimited shared Desktop – Basic, Standard, and Advanced licenses • Extensions • Unlimited Spatial, 3D, Geostatistical, Network, ArcPublisher, and Maplex • ArcGIS Server Products
ArcGIS License Levels • Licensed at different levels of functionality • Desktop Basic – for entry level users, can edit shapefile/personal geodatabase • Desktop Standard – for mid-level users, can edit multi-user database editing • Mid-level. Supports multi-user database editing • Desktop Advanced – for Power users, can design multi-user databases and conduct advanced geoprocessing • Availabilities of the tools are different depending on the license level
Stand Alone Licensing • For employees who: • Are constantly on the go • Work in remote offices • Work from home • Contact your GIS Coordinator for more information
Check out Pool License • ArcGIS 10.1 allows users to check out a license 90 days at a time • Open to ArcGIS Administrator. Check the license you want to check out and click OK.
Extensions • Add additional toolbars to ArcMap • Spatial Analyst – grid/ LiDAR processing • 3D Analyst – 3d modeling • Can be added regardless of license level, but.. • Some tools may not be available at certain license levels.
Add-ins • Provide customizations packaged within a single compressed file. • Can be buttons, tools, menus, or toolbars • DNR Add-ins: Quicklayers and Hydrography toolbars • X-ray, Xtools pro, EasyCalculate. . . • Work regardless of level of software licensing • Mostly free for download off the internet
Get Started Window • ArcMap – Getting Started window Different ways to display map documents Map Documents previously opened
Get Started Window Allows you look for more map documents Available templates Default geodatabase Cancel to start a new map document
Home Location Each map document has a default geodatabase (called Home) ArcMap saves geoprocessing results, store new datasets, export files, and access file-based information by defaultto Home This course does not work with geodatabases, so ignore the path . . . Default geodatabase
Getting Started If you want to start a new map document, then click New Maps or Cancel
ArcMap Interface • Table of Contents – Displays legend, selection, and source information for layers • Display Area –Where map is displayed • Data View – displays data (View) • Map View – displays map layout (Layout) • Status Bar – At bottom of the display, shows status, coordinate information, etc. • Toolbars – Organized sets of commands / tools
ArcMap: Data View Toolbars (can be moved and docked) Table of contents Display Area Status Bar
Toolbars • Commands and buttons are organized into toolbars • Can be floating or docked anywhere, turned on / off • Lots of toolbars exist – • Use the CUSTOMIZE | Toolbars menu option to see toolbars and their display status • If you lose a toolbar, look to see if it is checked in the list
Toolbars • Commonly used: • Standard – New, Open, Save, Print, etc. • Tools - interactive display navigation • Draw –work with graphics and text • Editor - for editing data • Layout –work on layouts • DNR Quick Layers 10
Toolbars • Toolbar Madness: A condition brought on by the inability to find toolbars • The ability of toolbars to be moved around provides a challenge to user support • Toolbars can hide behind things or pushed off screen • Closed – Open – Left/top/bottom/right
Toolbars Docked Toolbar Floating Toolbar
Data View Standard Toolbar Layout Toolbar Tools Toolbar Draw Toolbar
Catalog Window Standard Toolbar Very similar to ArcCatalog, but can be accessed within ArcMap
Search Window Use to search for tools, data, maps (some settings necessary prior to use)
Image Analysis Window Use to control the display of non-WMS layers
Tabs If your mouse is not hovering over these windows, they get tucked away to the right-corner of ArcMap window as tabs Open again by clicking the tab To keep open, click Pin button
Context Menus • Accessed by right-clicking • Shows options valid within the context of the item the mouse pointer is over • Almost every item in ArcGIS has a Context Menu • Get into the habit -you’ll be surprised at what you find!
Map Document • Work is saved in a file called a “Map Document” (.MXD) • Create new, open existing, and save documents from the File menu and/or the Standard Toolbar • Remember: Map documents store references to data, but not the data itself
Map Document Properties • File | Map Document Properties • Used mostly for documentation purposes • Stores helpful info • Can define how paths are stored • Absolute (save drive letter) • Relative (don’t save drive letter)
Table of Contents (TOC) • Layers draw in TOC from bottom up • ArcMap places rasters on the bottom, followed by polygons, then lines, then points • Reorder layers by selecting and dragging • Can show, hide, rename, or remove layers • Familiar checkbox for displaying data • Multiple layers can be grouped - expand to see the layers underneath • TOC is moveable/dockable
TOC Display Options Drawing Order Source Visibility Selection
TOC – Displaying Layers Layers with a check mark are visible Drawing Order Visibility
TOC – List by Sources Source • When adding Microsoft Access and Excel documents or any other table, they show up in the Source tab
List by Selection Selection • Selected shows the layers that contain selected records/features • Selectable shows the layers that you can select • Not selectable shows the layers that you can’t select
Data Frames • Are within the TOC • Display a collection of layers drawn in particular order for a given map extent and projection • Can have multiple data frames but only one can be active • Alt-Click to activate • Data Frames have their own properties
Layers • When you add a dataset to ArcMap, a layer is created • References the spatial data such as shapefile, raster, or geodatabase • Have a number of properties you can set(color, line thickness, fill-patterns. . . ) • Can be saved to a file on disk (.lyr) so that they can be shared with others or used in other map documents
Tools Toolbar • Navigation tools are found on the Tools Toolbar Interactive Zoom-in Interactive Zoom-Out Pan Zoom to Full-Extent Fixed Zoom-in Fixed Zoom-out Previous Extent Next Extent Select Feature Clear Selected Features Select Elements (Graphics) Identify Hyperlink Measure HTML popup Find Route Find Go to XY Open Time Slider Window Create Viewer Window
