Introduction Going to PE Beaufort street Grahamstown Currie Street Grahamstown Deliver a solution that improves the informal ride sharing method of hitchhiking, a popular means of travel by people in South Africa, taking advantage of the proliferation of mobile phones. Background • Vehicle Ridesharing Formal methods e.g. carpool clubs, organised dynamic method e.g. Avego Driver application for IPhone users, informal dynamic ride sharing e.g. hitchhiking. • Incentives Developed nations: Reduce carbon emissions, ease congestions, use of faster HOV lanes. Developing nations: Reduced trip costs to car owner, cheaper, quicker. • Research environment Urban (e.g. Grahamstown) and rural (e.g. Dwesa) living considerations (South Africa). Therefore, anticipating communities with different socio economic backgrounds and resources. • ICT4D Research, part of the Siyakhula Living Lab project Use sustainable ICT infrastructures for ICT4D projects. For this research, the Reed House Systems (RHS).

Goals • A dynamic ride sharing system that enables people to organize spontaneous vehicle ride sharing, primarily targeting mobile phones. • Derived from hitchhiking travel method. • Target mobile phone users. Mobile phones have infiltrated in all levels of communities in SA . This suggests the existence of old and new mobile phonesfor consideration. • Simplified interactions with the system. Easy to use, familiar methods e.g. SMS based services. • Use technologies that provide robust design and flexible management of the system. Reed House Systems (RHS) open source solutions with the Teleweaver (a service platform for integrated applications for marginalised communities). Server side implementations with OSGi specifications that enable modular application management. .

  6. Approach • Using iterative design method • Requirements gathering. Understandingsimilar dynamic ride sharing systems to have a good basis. Further understanding through interviews and participation in hitchhiking travel. • Use of relevant technologies. Spring framework for Java OSGi applications development. Java Micro Edition. • System testing Tests with emulators and mobile phones. Usability Testing. Iterative Design method
