Some Principles For Training OHP
1. Start from where participants are. • Participants bring many types of previous experience to a training event. • We need to spend time establishing common ground between participants as a basis for new learning.
2. Facilitate talk between participants • It is valuable for participants to exchange experiences and ideas – trainers can facilitate this by structuring talk in training. • Talk between participants can assist in developing ideas: interthinking.
3. Provide opportunities for active learning, personal review and reflection. • We need to provide opportunities for trainees to be engaged in activities, to do things as well as talk. • Reviewing and reflecting on activity enables processing at deeper levels.
4. Help participants to conceptualise where appropriate • Participants need to leave training with new ideas and skills to internalise. • Trainers need to be ready to contribute to the conceptualising (or theorising) process when participants are ready.
5. Create links with the real world of teaching – classrooms, schools, etc. • We need to help participants reconnect with the real worlds they inhabit during training events, to bring ideas back to the everyday world. • Activities which link training and the real world are useful in this respect.
