  2. Gustav Klimt was born on 14th July 1862 in Austria. He was a talented artist from an early age. His father was a goldsmith and Klimt used lots of gold leaf in his art work. Klimt was famous for his use of symbols and patterns in his work, particularly his portraits

  3. This painting is called the ‘Tree of Life’. The tree of life is a symbol found in many religions. It represents the connection between heaven and earth.

  4. This painting is called the ‘The Kiss’. This painting is meant to symbolise love.

  5. In this portrait painting, Klimt was heavily influenced by Egyptian symbols – particularly the Eye of Horus.

  6. In this part of a portrait painting, the image of the women is almost like a photograph with drawings and patterns as a background.
