MY Writing Process Tina Listerud Essay Writing – literary analysis
How Do I Tackle it? • Getting Started • Quote Inclusion • Organization • Final Drafting
Getting started • Free Write • Usually ends up turning into the main ideas for each paragraph of essay • Questions I ask? • What is the overall theme or main idea in the literature? • What are some of the events that happened that show this theme? • What is the writer trying to express about human mannerisms or society expectations? • What is happening in society while this book was written? • What big eye opening idea can I leave my audience with?
Quote Inclusion • Look through book and find a multitude of quotes for possible themes or main ideas • Jot down page numbers of possible ideas as well • Free write about quotes and possible ideas
Organization • Make outline pulling ideas from free writes • Decide which main idea I’m most passionate about and determine if I have enough quotes for that one main idea • Determine what sub-ideas I can incorporate into the main idea that I have already found quotes for
Final Drafting • Most of the actual writing has been done with the free writing and I usually just have to refine sentences, grammar, and organization. • Many times I copy and paste sentences into different paragraphs and re-write other sentences to make my point a little clearer. • Then I gather better vocabulary and more difficult sentence structures. • Then I proof-read again to make sure the transitions make sense and I am not leaving anything out.
