APPEARANCE • Elongated pike like fish • Sharp edged fang like teeth • dark green, dark blue, or gray on their upper body with silvery sides and chalky-white belly. • Barracudas live primarily in oceans, but certain species such as the Great Barracuda lives in brackish water
Behavior • A group or cluster of Barracuda is called a Battery • Voracious and opportunistic predators • They can move as fast as 27 mph • Adults are more or less solitary while young usually congregate • They prey on fish sometimes as large as themselves
Barracudas and Humans • Like sharks some species of Barracuda are dangerous to humans • Hand feeding and touching barracuda is to be avoided • Diamond rings and shiny objects can be mistaken for prey
Barracudas as Food • They are popular as both food and game fish • They can be eaten as fillets or steaks • Larger Barracudas can cause food poisoning such as, Ciguatera • Nigerians have been known to smoke them and use them in soups
