How are Resumes for Education Different? • How long should it be? • What should be listed first? • What order should you follow? • What format should you use?
For Education Resumes…. • Resume should be about 2 pages • References should be included with COMPLETE contact information (name, title, address, phone, and email). • List your objective, followed by your education and certifications earned • Follow the heading suggestions that follow
Headings to Include in the Resume • Your heading with name and complete contact info, including a link to your digital portfolio • Objective • Education • Professional Experience– Begin with student teaching when the time comes! • Honors and Activities • Skills • References
Objective Heading • Be specific about what job you are applying for • Short and to the point • Example: • To obtain a position as an agricultural science teacher at an outstanding high school.
Education Heading • List most recent education first • Do not list junior colleges unless you earned a degree there • List teacher certification • List high school since that is something they want to know
Education Example • Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Science-Teaching Option—Texas A&M University, December 2004 • Texas Teacher Certification in Secondary Agricultural Science and Technology Grades 6-12, December 2004 • High School Diploma—Snook High School, May 2000
Do Not Include “Work Experience”, Instead…. • Title it “Professional Experience” • Include everything related to teaching, both content and young people related • List positions and activities starting with the most recent experiences first • Show increased responsibility if you can • Use short, active sentences that describe what you did or learned • Provide months and years
Professional Experience Example • Student teacher at Madisonville High School, January –May 2004 Taught Principles of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, Floral Design, Advanced Animal Science, and Professional Communications; supervised student projects on and off campus; and trained students for Livestock and Floriculture Career Development Events.
Honors and Activities • List awards, honors and activities with most recent first • May include some high school if relevant • Show the breadth of your involvement and be specific about your role • Examples: • Awarded American FFA Degree, 2001 • Member of Future Agricultural Science Teachers, 2000-2004 • Served as Radio judge at Aggiefest, 2004-2005
Skills • Include a skills section if you have specific skills that would be useful • Examples: • Hunter Education Instructor Certification • CPR Certified • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Prezi, and basic web page development
References • ALWAYS include 4-6 references • They are required to talk to 3 people; so 6 is preferable over 4 • Use professional people from your field (ag teachers, cooperating teachers, AGSC Professors) • Should also include former employers • Do NOT use family members even if you worked for them • References should include COMPLETE contact information (name, title, address, phone, and email).
General Suggestions • Use natural toned stationary that copies well • Use readable fonts that match the cover letter • Triple check grammar and spelling! • Use a format that is easy to glance for information, that copies clean • Do NOT include personal information like height, weight, health status, marital status, or religious beliefs
Cover Letter Tips If you send a resume, send a cover letter!
COVER LETTER: Parts to Include • Letterhead– Should match your resume exactly • Date • Address Block—Complete name, position, address • Salutation– Dear Dr. Seuss: • Opening Paragraph– How did you hear about the position?; What position are you applying for?
COVER LETTERParts continued • Body Paragraph– What about you? Why are you the right person for the job? (Don’t repeat info in your resume) • Closing Paragraph– Ask for the interview, tell them how you can be reached. • Closure—Sincerely, • 4 spaces (place for signature) • Type your name
Remember… • The cover letter and resume is YOU on paper • It is your key to getting an interview
