  1. West Coast IOOSData and Portals Jennifer Patterson, CeNCOOS – MBARI Darren Wright, SCCOOS –Scripps Institute of Oceanography Emilio Mayorga, NANOOS – University of Washington West Coast Ocean Data Network Meeting November 19-20, 2013

  2. Outline I. Background on West Coast IOOS II. Individual Regional Association Presentations III. West Coast Collaborations *

  3. National IOOS and Regional Associations *

  4. IOOS vs. Regional Association Goals • IOOS (National) • Standards-based data services • Seamless data integration at national scale • Assessment of system maturity & robustness • Regional Associations • Serve regional community of users and providers • Facilitate integration of local data sets, data streams • Consume federal (national) data • Redistribute data regionally, easy access • Ongoing engagement • Leveraging national and regional strengths, capabilities • Reconciling national and regional views, priorities *

  5. WC RA Data Management • Our Data • Where we are with data management • Where we are headed • Potential RA Contributions to WCODP • Potential WCODP benefits to WA *

  6. CeNCOOS Data Our Assets Other Datasets Meteorological Stations Satellite Data (SST, Chlorophyll) Additional Gliders MBARI Moorings AIS Real-time Sensors 11 shore stations 1 glider Extensive HF Radar network Models COAMPS Atmospheric Model ROMS (3DVAR) ROMS (4DVAR) *

  7. CeNCOOS: Where We Are Now New director 2012 → external data management review • All datasets collected by CeNCOOS not available to public through database/portal, discontinuities in data. • Initial database intended to meet IOOS core variable requirement not necessarily regional user requirements Result of Review • New data management firm hired Aug 2013 • Leverage capabilities developed for the Alaska OOS data portal/catalog • Engaged in National IOOS data interoperability developments *

  8. CeNCOOS: Where We Are Going New system: • Combo database and THREDSS • Serve SOS for national IOOS objectives • Other services for interoperability with other portals Data ingest into new system • Real-time data from CeNCOOS assets • Historical data records from CeNCOOS assets • Real-time data non-CeNCOOS assets Portal interface is in development / under review • Scheduled to be launched January 2014 • Intensive review and additions first half of 2014 *

  9. SCCOOS Data sccoos.org *

  10. SCCOOS: Where We Are Now • Completed a standards-based foundation for DMAC capabilities by converting HF radar and shore station formats into NetCDF and THREDDS. • Released ncSOS service for its automated and manual shorestations. • Leveraged CDIP wave data that are decimated to the NDBC for ingestion into WMO GTS *

  11. SCCOOS: Where We Are Going • Ocean Acidification instruments due to arrive in January • Add content management system to website for more timely updates • Place more data sets in THREDDS for dissemination *

  12. NANOOS Data nvs.nanoos.org *

  13. NANOOS: Where We Are Now Custom, leaner portals (NVS Web Apps) with custom data subsets and tools Distribute and leverage data via web services, partner tools *

  14. NANOOS: Where We Are Going Web Service Dissemination of Data and Visualizations Continuous upkeep & updates, for data, data systems, applications! Data • More CO2 data streams • WADOE & VENUS Ferry sensors • AIS ship locations • Historical datasets Software and Systems • NVS UI: long time series, depth profiles, mapped values, ... • Upgraded IOOS SOS standard web service access • Geospatial web services • HTML 5 mobile apps *

  15. WC RA's Potential Contributions to WCDOP Ocean Data, Data Integration, and Best Practices • Expertise with real-time and physical/chemical oceanographic data • Experience in data integration and interoperability at regional to (inter)national scales • Portal development expertise • Describe and share available data sources within our regions • Register RA-aggregated oceanographic datasets, provide feedback and advice • Act as intermediaries between data provider and WCDOP • Exchange regional user needs assessments *

  16. WCDOP Potential Benefits to WC RA's • Greater access to variety of data types for inclusion in our regional data portals • Need to ensure interoperability of datasets, appropriate metadata and appropriate data update schedules • Potential to reach larger and more varied audiences with both RA data and broader efforts • Potential collaborations with other WCGA data contributors • Best practices and common conventions for geospatial data dissemination and web services *
