Protest Timeline • 1963 • In August the first organized Vietnam War protests took place in New York and Philadelphia • 1964 • - May 2- 400 to 1000 students marched through Time Square and another 700 in San Francisco • Smaller numbers also marched in Boston, Seattle, and Madison, Wisconsin. • 1965 • Draft card buning was a form of protest • During a 100,000 man protest the President increased the number of troops from 120,000 to 400,000 • 1966 • 20,000 protesters took part in another anti war movement in New York • New York Times had a three page anti-war ad which was signed by 6,400 professors • Protest was set up outside of the White House and Washington Monument • Sit ins occurred in Berkeley and across other campuses throughout the year • Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) refused to go to war, stating that he has nothing against the Viet Cong

Cont. • 1967 • January 14 - 20,000-30,000 people staged a “Human Be-In" anti-war event in Haight, Ashburn, San Francisco • March 25 – Martin Luther King Jr. led a march of 5,000 against the war in Chicago, Illinois • April 15 - 100,000 people marched to the UN building in New York • 1969 • The Moratorium demonstrations took place on October 15, 1969. Millions of Americans took the day off to participate in local demonstrations against the war. These were the first major demonstrations against the Nixon administration's handling of the war. • November 15- 1969 crowds estimated up to half a million people participated in an anti-war demonstration in Washington, D.C. • The protests were organized by the New Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam (New Mobe) and the Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam (SMC).

  4. Cont. • 1970+ • On August 24, 1970, near 3:40 AM, a van filled with ammonium nitrate and fuel oil mixture was detonated on the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Sterling Hall bombing • Kent State Shooting- May 4th
