Mailroom Security: Bio-Hazardous Materials & Mail Bombs From October 13 – November 16, 2001 Nationwide: Postal Inspectors responded to nearly 20,000 hoax and suspicious substance calls. The Northeast Division: Postal Inspectors responded to nearly 1 ,000 hoax and suspicious substance calls.
Major Facility Coverage U. S. Postal Inspectors were required to staff each major USPS facility. The staffing of Postal Inspectors at these facilities played a major role in: • calming fears of employees • acting as a liaison with responding law enforcement and HAZMAT teams • ensuring hoax’s were not perpetrated by USPS employees
Traditional Investigative Work Stoppage From October 13th to November 16th Discontinued all traditional Investigations Fraud: -Telemarketing -Insurance Fraud -Health Care Fraud Child Sexual Exploitation Identity Theft Mail Theft Narcotics in the Mail Continued Investigations pertaining to acts of violence
Mailroom Security Training Throughout New England, Postal Inspectors conducted 130presentations, to over 5,000 individuals, representing nearly 600 corporations and government offices. • The presentation covers Biological Agents, Mail Bombs, Telephone hoax calls and Mailroom Security procedures. • Attendees were from U.S. and state political offices, military, government, law enforcement, corporations and universities. • Locally, we published the mailroom security guide at web sites of several Chiefs of Police, the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators, the Insurance Fraud Bureau, among others. • Other organizations, like the Greater Boston Federal Executive Board, made mass distributions to their members.
