What is BIAC? • BIAC is the voice of business at the OECD • Independent organization officially recognized by the OECD as being representative of the OECD business community • Members are the major buisness organizations in the 30 OECD Member Countries • In 2005, over 1500 business representatives were actively involved in BIAC through 31 standing committees and policy groups
BIAC’s Primary Objectives • To positively influence the direction of OECD policy initiatives • To ensure business and industry needs are adequately addressed in OECD policy decision instruments • To provide members with timely information on OECD policies and their implications for business and industry
BIAC Membership • BIAC Member Organizations designate national experts to BIAC committees • Committees consist of both company representatives and member organization staff • BIAC Committee Chair and Vice-Chairs provide leadership for overall activies and serve as primary BIAC contact to appropriate OECD committee
BIAC Committee on Biotechnology • Over 100 participants • Participate in following: • OECD Working Group on Harmonization of Regulatory Oversight in Biotechnology • OECD Task Force for the Safety of Novel Foods and Feeds • OECD Working Party on Biotechnology (health-related technology issues)
BIAC’s Participation • Attendance at OECD meetings • Participation in Global forums • Consultations with OECD leadership and government delegates • Provides OECD with responses to OECD working papers in progress • Develops positions on issues that business feels should be further address at OECD
