No changes to current environment required. No additional resources required. Increased performance and quality of service for print and file services currently provided by Windows NT systems. Fairly easy to implement in a short period of time with minimal planning. Option A: Pros
Option A: Cons • Inheritance of current service issues. (Maintenance and monitoring are very complex and time consuming). • No added benefit of Windows 2000 features including Active Directory. • Continued increase in operational and support complexity of current environment. • No additional support services provided in the form of directory-enabled applications.
Option A: Cons • As time progresses, it will become more expensive and difficult to achieve enterprise-wide IT initiatives. • Other UH colleges/divisions, or campuses would have the opportunity to lead the UH central campus in Windows-based initiatives. • Some machines may require minor or major upgrades to meet Windows 2000 hardware requirements. • Inability to utilize new releases of applications designed to take advantage of Windows 2000 features based on Active Directory.

Option B: Pros • For units partnering with IT, maintenance of hierarchal Windows domain structure necessary for full utilization of Windows 2000 features. • Improved quality of service (QOS) and support within IT partner collaborations. • Benefits of Active Directory implementation at the UH central campus will facilitate the automation of many processes resulting in improvements to QOS. • Increased performance and quality of service for print and file services currently provided by Windows NT systems. • UH would become a leader among other UH colleges/divisions and campuses with respect to Windows-based initiatives.
Option B: Pros • Central support within a common infrastructure. Easier to focus support and user training in the simplified model. • Standardization of Windows desktop configurations among IT partner units. • Simplified account and resource management. • Easier to incorporate colleges/divisions with no prior IT partnering experience. • Ability to utilize future applications that are released to take advantage of Windows 2000 features and Active Directory.
Option B: Cons • For units not partnering with IT, limited access to centralized computing resources. (This is a current service dilemma). • For units not partnering with IT, no Active Directory integration. Effectiveness of automation processes severely limited. • Changes in domain structure will require significant planning among IT departments and partner units. • Realization of the benefits of Windows 2000 at a system level will require the cooperation of all the UH campuses.
Option B: Cons • Some machines may require minor or major upgrades to meet Windows 2000 hardware requirements. • Colleges/Divisions may find it difficult to implement Windows 2000 on their own as compared to Windows NT because Windows 2000 is designed as an enterprise OS and not a departmental OS. • For units not partnering with IT, inability to utilize new releases of applications designed to take advantage of Windows 2000 features like Active Directory.

Option C: Pros • Full realization of enterprise-wide IT objectives. • Maximized efficient utilization of UH resources. • Full benefits of Active Directory implementation at the UH central campus. • Standardization of Windows desktop configurations. • Central support within a common infrastructure. • Easier to focus support and user training in a simplified model. • Major improvement in Windows desktop support.
Option C: Pros • Support for legacy OS’s and applications should decrease as more people standardize. • Simplified account and resource management. • UH would become a leader among other UH campuses and Universities with respect to Windows-based initiatives • Easier to incorporate colleges/divisions with no prior IT partnering experience. • Increased performance and quality of service for print and file services currently provided by Windows NT systems. • Ability to utilize future applications that are released to take advantage of Windows 2000 features and Active Directory.
Option C: Cons • Politically challenging in current environment. • Significant change in resource responsibilities for IT. • Requires extensive planning among IT departments and partner units. • Requires extensive end user training which is somewhat offset by a simpler computing environment. • Realization of the benefits of Windows 2000 at a system level will require the cooperation of all the UH campuses. • Some machines may require minor or major upgrades to meet Windows 2000 hardware requirements.
