Explore the evidence for evolution through the analysis of fossil records. Evaluate scientific explanations for sudden appearance, stasis, and sequential nature of groups in the fossil record. Learn about concepts such as extinction, index fossils, adaptive radiation, convergent evolution, coevolution, punctuated equilibrium, gradualism, and stasis.

Evidence for Evolution 7B Analyze and evaluate scientific explanations concerning any data of sudden appearance, stasis and sequential nature of groups in the fossil record.
Extinction • When an organism dies and it is the last organism of that species alive on earth
Index Fossils • Fossils of species that are easily recognizable, that lived in specific times and a wide range of areas
Adaptive Radiation • Several species that are very different evolved from 1 common ancestor
Convergent Evolution • Process by which unrelated organisms come to resemble (look like) each other
Coevolution • Process by which 2 species evolve in response to changes in each other over time
Punctuated Equilibrium • A pattern of evolution in which long stable periods are interrupted by brief periods of more rapid change
Gradualism • Evolution of a species by gradual, slow accumulation of small genetic changes over long periods of time
Stasis • The structure of a species in the fossil record doesn’t change over a long period of time
