Who We Are: The Foundry Industry Foundries primarily produce chips based on their customers’ or third-party firms’ intellectual property (IP). The foundry business model was initiated in the 80’s with Taiwan as early adopters of the new approach. Today, some semiconductor companies design, manufacture, and market their chips (Integrated Circuits). Most focus on the design and marketing and outsource their manufacturing to a foundry Several foundries also provide other types of services, such as semiconductor design, photomask making, wafer probing and semiconductor packaging and testing.
