Hitler Youth • Racial organization to take all youth out of social backgrounds and mix them together. • The Weimer Republic had a large number of youth groups as did the NSDAP.
July 4, 1926-the “Greater German Youth Movement” under control of Kurt Gruber was officially made part of NSDAP. • 21 year old Gruber named the 1st Reichsführer of the Hitler Youth.
Gruber had run-ins with Röhm of the SA, of which the Hitler Youth was subordinate. • October 30, 1931 Hitler appointed Balder von Schirach Reichsjugendführer. 1938
December 1936-Hitler Youth Law made membership compulsory and banned other youth organizations. • August 1940 Schirach replaced by Arthur Axmann. 1943-Valor awards ceremony for actions during air raids
Organization • At the age of 6 children would enter the Volksschule. • At 10 males moved to the Deutsches Jungvolk (DJV) [German Young Folk] and females to the Deutsches Jungmädel (DJM) [German Young Maidens]-this marked the beginning of their political education.

At age 14 until 18 or 19, males joined the Hitler-Jugend (HJ) [Hitler Youth]. • Females joined the Bund Deutscher Mädel (DBM) [League of German Maidens]. • Males given their bayonet style sheath knives engraved with the slogan “Blut und Ehre” (Blood and Honor).
