History of the Time • Native Americans traveled across a land bridge that once linked Alaska and Russia across the Bering Strait. • The first successful English settlement in North America began when a group landed in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. • Within months, all but 30 were dead.
What People are talking about. • Slavery – colonists began buying slaves • Religion – Puritans exile Roger Williams in 1636 for his religious beliefs. Mary Dyer is publicly hanged on the Boston Common for her Quaker beliefs. • New Fauna and Flora – Europeans come upon exotic animals (ex- opossum)
Firsts • 1500’s – Spanish explorers bring horses • 1612 – John Rolfe harvests first tobacco crop in Virginia • 1673 – Mail service began temporarily • 1716 – First theater in the colonies opens in Williamsburg
Food and Fashion • Native foods – corn, squash, beans and fish are abundant • Cattle and Pigs are brought from Europe. • Chew the resin from some trees • Plain, dark clothing • Women still wore layers of petticoats and underskirts • Southern Planter families dressed more lavishly.
Arts and Entertainment • Decorating clothing, baskets, pottery and blankets • Girls learn to sew and embroider • Dice games, lacrosse and hoop-and-spear • Play musical instruments • Puritans outlaw dice, cards and nine-pin bowling so some colonists invent ten pin bowling.
