  2. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner NOVEMBER 2012 Grade 2 News Pre-K News Grade 1 News November has lots in store for second grade. We will be finishing our introductory science unit, learning place value in math, work hard in literacy block and continue to improve on our writing skills. Our grade would like to thank all the volunteers that came with us on our field trip to The Natural History Museum in October. We would also like to thank those of you who came to our Fall Museum Celebration. What a neat way to celebrate learning! Very cold weather will soon be on its way. Please make sure your child is prepared for outdoor recess with a warm jacket, hats and gloves. Each second grade teacher will be starting a new intervention cycle in November. Miss Eber will focus on writing, Mrs. Troyer will be teaching reader’s theater and Ms. Kane will be working on graphs. Many of our students have had great attendance so far this year. Kudos to them! If your child does need to miss school, please contact the teacher for make up work. Be mindful of the cold and flu season which is upon us. Take precautions such as washing hands often, coughing into your sleeve, throwing dirty tissues in the garbage and staying home for 24 hours if you have a fever. We don’t want to spread those germs! Each day in November will be especially packed with learning since it is a “short” month. Remember, there will be a half day of school on November 2nd, and school will be closed for Election Day on the Nov. 6th and conferences on Nov. 8th and 9th. We will also be out for the Thanksgiving Holiday November 21st, 22nd and 23rd. Enjoy!!! We have been having a great time in Pre-K.  Thanks to everyone for their help with our Nursery Rhyme Day.  It was a huge success!  The kids looked great in their costumes and did a fantastic job reciting their nursery rhymes. We will be going on our field trip to Pizza Hut this month.  Mrs. Chance's class will be going on Monday, November 5th and Mrs. Dean's classes will be going on Wednesday, November 7th.  This trip will be a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about their community and their community helpers.  Our next unit will be "My Five Senses." Please encourage your child to describe what they see, hear, smell, feel, and taste as we approach the holidays. We look forward to meeting with all of you at parent teacher conferences.  If you have not sent back your confirmation slip please make sure to do so.  Thanks again for your continued support! The Pre-K Team Parent Conferences are scheduled for November 8 and 9. It will be good to share your child's progress with you at that time.  Your child's teacher will be showing you samples of your child's work and other ways that we follow your child's academic growth.  It is important that you bring some questions and or comments to the conference.  The conference process works best if we share ideas of ways to best meet the needs of your child. We are looking forward to seeing you in November!        The Kindergarten Team Thanks to all of our parents and family members who went with us to the zoo!  The children learned a lot and it was great fun.  November is a very busy month, please pay careful attention to the school calendar.  PLEASE make sure your child is reading and returning completed reading logs weekly, they will be recognized at the awards assembly at the end of the semester.  We are studying the following units:    Math- Addition and subtraction facts to 12. Please continue to read with your child each night as it is an important part of their growth as a reader.  This will also help them accomplish their nightly reading comprehension and reading log homework. We are very excited to introduce the new portion of our Math series.  Students have been introduced to the online website to assist them in meeting their math goals.  You may also log-in to www.pearsonsuccessnet.com at home to enhance your students learning and keep an eye on what we are learning in class. We have just finished our study of Paleo, Archaic, and Woodland Indians.  We will begin exploring the first colonists to arrive here in Maryland.  Starting in the 2nd marking period the students will be switching teachers for science.  Each teacher has become a master of their science content area and will be teaching that area to each of our students over the course of the year.  Mrs. Comegys will have Mrs. Rosendale's students, Mrs. Rosendale will have Mrs. Settelmaier's students, and Mrs. Settelmaier will have Mrs. Comegys students for this next rotation.  Thank you for your support, keep working hard!!! Common Core State Standards By: Michele Hampton The Common Core State Standards are a set of high-quality academic expectations in English/language arts (ELA) and mathematics that define both the knowledge and skills all students should master by the end of each grade level to be on track for success in college and careers. They were created through a state-led initiative and have been adopted by more than 40 states, including Maryland, which is revising its Curriculum to align with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The standards establish consistent learning goals for all students – regardless of where they live – so that children will stay on track in school when moving from one state to another. With a clear roadmap of academic expectations, students, parents, and teachers can work together toward shared goals. The standards are relevant to the real world, focusing on the knowledge and skills students will need to succeed in life after high school, in both post-secondary education and a globally competitive workforce. A diverse team of teachers, parents, administrators, researchers, and content experts developed the CCSS to be academically rigorous, attainable for students, and practical for teachers and districts. Maryland State Department of Education, 2012.

  4. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner NOVEMBER 2012 Health Room Chinese Educators Visit Sudlersville Elementary School On Monday, October 1st, students at SES enjoyed a visit from two Chinese educators who are staying in Queen Anne's County for two weeks.  Lu Qing, an administrator from Canglang District in Suzhou, China and Chen Lei, a third grade teacher in Canglang District Experimental Primary School.  They are particularly enjoying teaching lessons on calligraphy and experiencing the excitement of the students. There has been an increase in the number of pertussis cases in the United States. Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease. A person infected with pertussis can be contagious 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after symptoms first begin. It is spread to others by coming in contact with one’s infected nose, throat, and mouth secretions and droplets. Symptoms can consist of a fever, runny nose, and a bad cough. The cough may become severe and sound like a whoop. Treatment consists of antibiotics from your doctor. Your child in elementary school should be fully vaccinated against pertussis. Full vaccination occurs when a child has had 5 doses of DTap or 4 doses of DTap if the 4th dose was given on or after the 4th birthday. Tdap should again be given to adolescents when they go for their 11 to 12 year old preventive healthcare visit. Parents are you up to date with your own immunizations? The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has issued new recommendations for the use of Tdap vaccine in adults. The next time you receive your tetanus booster (Td) you will most likely receive a Tdap. Adults aged 65 and older who have close contact with an infant less than 12 months should also receive a dose of Tdap. Discuss this with your doctor on your next visit. 5. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner NOVEMBER 2012 New AssistantBy:  Michele HamptonPlease join me in welcoming Jennifer Addis, our new assistant.  Ms. Addis will be helping teachers in grades one through four.  She has twin boys in 5th grade at Sudlersville Middle School.  She enjoys photography, baking, reading, crafts, and her two dogs.  She is very excited to join the SES team!! Math Matters numbers using ten and powers of ten like 1; 10; 100; 1,000; 10,000; 100,000; and so on. We learn that numbers have place value. When a digit of 3 is in the tens place it has a value ten times greater than a digit of 3 in the ones place. This basic understanding is also at the heart of our money system of pennies, dimes, and dollars. It continues into the decimal values, as well. Younger students use the grouping of tens to show bundles when counting the days in school. They also learn that our “teen” numbers are 10 + some ones…12=10+2, 15=10+5 and so on. They learn to place “dots” on a ten-frame to see the value of sets. As they get older, students learn that number patterns of ten are seen on our hundreds grids and begin to form, compare, add and subtract these values. In grades 2 and up, students increase the magnitude of the numbers they study and use for computation and extend these base ten patterns. At home: You can help your child at home by grouping 10 pennies and exchanging for a dime. Group 10 dimes and exchange for a dollar. Group 10 one dollar bills and exchange for a $10 bill. Look at numbers in advertisements and ask about ones, tens and hundreds in the numbers. If you have an internet ready computer, you can practice with your child on www.ixl.com/signin/sudlersville or www.pearsonsuccessnet.com Mrs. Gloyd, Math Specialist Common Core Update: Students in grade 1 through 4 have just taken their first “Benchmark” assessment to see what content they know at the beginning of the year. They will be assessed again in January and May to see how they are progressing on their math skills. Standards of Math PracticesStandard #2 is “Reason abstractly and quantitatively.” This math practice asks math thinkers to read or hear a math situation and think of a mathematical number model for the problem. Math thinkers also use related facts to solve problems. Two people fit in a go-cart.How many go-carts will you need to rent for 5 people? For this problem, you can picture a go-cart holding 2 people. If there are 5 people, then you will need to have 3 go carts to hold them, as shown by the loops of 2 on the number line above. A number model might be 2+2+1=5. Another number model would be 5/2= 2 with a remainder of 1, so we would need 3 cars to hold all the people. Content: Numbers Base Ten In NUMBERS BASE TEN, students learn how our number system uses ten (10) as an anchor to form numbers, We make groups of tens and ones to make 2-digit numbers, We regroup when we get a total of ten or greater when adding. We “borrow” or regroup using sets of ten when subtracting. We can name Reading Quarter 1 is winding down.  Those students who have met their "Reading Goal" for this quarter will receive an award certificate and a free book.  To meet their goal, students had to read 4 nights per week for at least 20 minutes and write a response about what they read on their log sheet.   The first log sheet for Quarter 2 will come home on November 5th.Students are working hard in their Literacy Blocks.   Your child's homeroom teacher will share their progress with you during Parent/Teacher conferences Nov. 8th and Nov. 9th.  Thank you for your support as you help your student/s become successful readers.  Remember, the more your child reads, the better reader they will become.   If your child is too young to read, it is very important that you read to them each day.It is also just as valuable for you to read to your older students.   Share your enthusiasm and love for reading.  You will find it is contagious.HAVE FUN READING!Mrs. Thurber Reading Specialist

  7. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner NOVEMBER 2012 Art Parent Involvement 3. Ask to see your child’s work. There is no better way to see how your child is progressing than to look at his or her school work. 4. Ask for suggestions. If you child is doing well, ask what you can do to keep things on a positive track. If there are problems, ask what you can do to help. 5. Clarify and summarize as you go. Teachers sometimes use educational buzzwords or acronyms. If you don’t understand something the teacher says, just ask! Things are looking colorful in the art room!  We are starting to hang up our first finished pieces. For the first marking period, our focus was on line and shape. Now we are moving onto color, space, and pattern. Students will be creating piñatas, landscapes, fall glue drawings and much more. We will be using a variety of material (please remember those art shirts!) including paints, chalk pastel, oil pastel, and even copper.  Please stop in and visit our busy art room! Thank you, Cassie  Hosler SES ART Watch D.O.G.S.!Have you seen them in the hall, helping in the classrooms, gym, Hispanic Heritage Day, lunch and recess? Their pictures are also displayed on the bulletin board near the front entrance under “Wall of Fame”. This program has already been very successful. The students are very proud when their fathers and other male role models have volunteered as a Watch D.O.G.S. The staff really appreciates their time and effort also! Not only do the dads get to wear the special t-shirt all day, but so do their students! There is also a goodie bag for the student of the Watch D.O.G.S. and students may also receive a “Great Student” sticker from the Watch D.O.G.S. if he sees a student displaying great student behavior! To all those positive male role models out there who have not stepped up and signed up to be a Watch D.O.G.S., please check the calendar in the cafeteria for available dates. We could use your help! An updated version of the Parent Involvement Plan and Family Compact with parent input will be reviewed with parents during the Parent Teacher Conferences on November 8 and 9. Please be sure to sign the compact. Grades 3 and 4 students will also be asked to sign the Compact. Parent /Teacher conference tips for a successful conference: 1. Plan for it. Before you come to your conference, write out questions you would like to ask. What are my child’s strengths and weaknesses? 2. Keep an open mind. Your goal is to work for cooperation between you and your child’s teacher. Even it the teacher says something you disagree with, try to listen to what he or she has to say.
