Why? • Series of explosions destroyed reactor 4 in the power plant • 10 day blaze of fire • Hundreds of staff and firefighters • 50+ emergency workers killed • Radiation • Towns evacuated overnight (300,000 people)
Aftermath • Area surrounding the plant was evacuated • 19 mile exclusion zone • Reports predict 4,000 – 200,000 cancer related deaths
