By Renato Maguire The Chernobyl disaster
A summary of events • On April 26th, 1986, a reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power point suffered a severe meltdown. The result of the meltdown was radioactive fallout that affected nearby geographical areas extensively. The events at Chernobyl still resonate heavily today and continue to raise concerns about the safety of nuclear power.
The causes of the disaster • The main causes of the nuclear disaster were poor management and bad organization at the plant. These two factors led to an unstable working environment, and a disaster was seemingly unavoidable with these conditions in place.
Short term consequences of the explosion • The short term consequences of the explosion were immense. It caused the deaths of an unclear number of workers and created a highly radioactive “zone”, which was essentially the area around the plant. Many of the towns that fell inside of the zone had to be evacuated. • Reactor 4 after the explosion
Long term consequences of the explosion • The long term consequences of the explosion were not as hazardous to human life as the short term consequences were. The United Nations Scientific Committee of the Effects of Atomic Radiation, or UNSCEAR, found that “there is no evidence of a major public health impact attributable to radiation exposure 20 years after the accident”.
Long term consequences of the explosion continued • However, the explosion and following radioactive fallout affected the surrounding geographical areas heavily, and created what is now known as the “Red Forest”, which is a highly radioactive stretch of land containing many mutations caused by the disaster.
