  1. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this lesson is to use the Lego Bible and the Vicar of Dibley to help you answer an exam question about Christian attitudes to the role of women.

OUTCOMES… Your GOALS for the end of this lesson are… GradesC You will be able to explain what can be learnt from the bible about the role of women in Christianity • Grade B • You will be able to identify why different Christian denominations hold different beliefs about women church leaders. • Grade A-A* • You will be able to decide whether you agree or disagree with the views of Anthony Kennedy and explain why.

  4. Christian attitudes to equal rights for women How does Christianity view the role of women? Are women equal to men in Christianity? This lesson will look to answer these questions…

  5. Are women equal? • The bible says YES… • The book of Genesis in the Old Testament shows us this…

  6. “God created man in his own image…

  7. …male and female, he created them.” Genesis 1:27

  8. Are women equal? What does this teach about the role of women according to Christianity? Answer this on your sheet… God created man and woman to be equal. They should not be treated any differently. They have equal roles.

  9. Are women equal? The bible also says NO… The teaching of St.Paul in the New Testament shows us this…

  14. Not just St.Paul... …and he wasn’t the only early Christian who had it in for women… Martin Luther (1484-1546) had this to say…

  16. I'm a goner… …if a women grows weary and at least dies from child bearing it matters not. Let her die from bearing – she is there to do it.

  17. Jesus and women... Jesus treated women with great respect, even though he lived in a male dominated society. Jesus had many female followers and he taught and helped them just as he did men. he did only choose male disciples… Why do you think this was? Was Jesus sexist? BUT

  18. So is CHRISTIANITY sexist? Christian attitudes to equal rights for women cannot be discussed without looking at the debate within the Christian church surroundingWOMENbeing CHURCH LEADERS(i.e. priests, vicars, ministers). NO WOMEN…IT SAYS SO RIGHT HERE…

  19. Women Priests - To be or not to be? Until the late 1980’s all vicars/priests were male. A Church synod (council) decided that women could be ordained(become church leaders). The Church changed in response to a changing society. Some vicars left the Church in Protest. The Pope in 1994 wrote a letter saying that women could not become priests. It was inappropriate and broke with tradition.

  20. It is only recently that some churches have allowed women to become ministers or vicars (including the Church of Englandin 1994) but others, such as the Roman Catholic Church, will still not allow this. SO...

Think about what we have looked at this lesson and complete the boxes on your sheet… • Roman Catholics think that… • Men and women have equal rights and they can have any role in the church but they can’t be a priest or bishop. • Because… • The Bible says that men and women were created equally by God. • Only men can be priests because the Pope said women priests broke with tradition. • Traditional Protestants think that… • Men and women have separate and different roles and so cannot have equal rights • Because… • St Paul says women should not speak in church • He had only male disciples. He spoke to and taught women but he never gave them any power or authority. • Modern Protestants think that…. • Men and women have equal rights and they have women ministers and priests • Because… • God created men and women at the same time and equal. • Jesus’ message was for all. He taught equality. • Tradition is based on the past when society was male dominated. Times have changed.
