Knowing Employment is the Goal • Developing a good life that includes safety and security • Identifying “who is this person” – strengths, skills, assets, talents, “interests”, relationships and experiences through the Discovery process • Identifying supports • Identifying services
ASK 2017 Discovery: Who is This Person? • What does the individual offer? • What are the contexts in which this individual is the best of who they are? • There are very intentional participation with the individual in various contexts both familiar and novel • The individual tries a variety of activities • Capturing it in a profile – capturing all the contributions a person can make and the conditions to guide the job development process
ASK 2017 What We Don’t Want To Do? • Asking: What do you want to do? – answers are made up or or what is expected to answer • Running a number of “tests, aptitudes, etc.” • Having only 1 or 2 experiences or the same type of experience (e.g., retail) • Not having the proper supports (technology, instruction, support to employer and individual) • Having the experience in a facility-based or segregated setting
