Idea • Started with RP How to enhance the treatment outcomes for people in treatment • Bring research to practice
Personal skills to develop: • Working together rather than getting to far out in front • Focusing on infrastructure rather content • Sensitive to organizational structure
Rationale and Purpose • Within the substance abuse field, a well trained workforce directly related to better client outcomes (Kathleen Carroll – Yale) • Identifies and grows talents within the industry • Improves retention within the field • Building a foundation on which to implement evidence based practice • Counselor development
Organization • Training Institute under Baltimore City Directorate • Arranges workforce development and training • Self sustaining • Recognized for CEU’s by the state • Partnering with OETAS, ATTC, Trainers

Lessons learned • Worked within existing structures/organizations • Reaching out to potential partners and letting them bring their expertise to the table • Not only counselor focused in terms of certification, but systems focused in terms of establishing and institutionalizing EBP at all levels of the system
Barriers • Fitting into the current training environment • Learning from past training experiences in Baltimore • Project Boost • Staff turnover • Developing trainings and trainers • Lack of infrastructure within the Baltimore City Directorate
Future directions • Provide trainings • Evaluate outcomes of providers that focus on training • Evaluate the trainings for content and participant satisfaction • Modify the trainings as indicated
